Follow the Rabbit
Our idea to produce, support and promote music was born to the name 'mixomacoustic', a sister-act to the fledging promotion company 'mixomatosis', in the Spring of 2003. Meeting 'Monkey' aka Mark at a very new open mic night in Liverpool's Bar CaVa, we got involved, and soon Collen was running an open mic of his own there. He mixed covers and original songs on battered acoustic guitars, encouraged other musicians that started to filter in to get involved too.
The idea was to give people the ability to play -and be listened to - people quickly flocked to these intimate arrangements. Cover versions were welcome for the opportunity for people to sing along, but also original material by some of Liverpool's up and coming singer songwriters/bands were tested and got good responses, if it was itself good...
...Over the next 3 years, we took the incredibly simple open mic format to many venues around Liverpool, at times often running 4 a week. We met even more musicians (including 'Tribal' & Tony Reid, two exceptional artists and now co-run the open-mic nights), occupying every known colour on the spectrum of talent.
We sustained a long-popular night at Bar Hannah, the short-lived re-opening of Heebie Jeebies, the Sunday-Hangover at The Pilgrim, also at the Zanzibar as part of the ill-fated M*A*S*H team and more intimate sessions at The Flute, Slaughterhouse, Crosskeys, and current student favourite Monday night at The Cambridge.
